We know that the climate crisis is not an isolated and singular challenge. Climate justice is racial justice, gender justice, immigrant justice, Earth justice, and so much more. We can advance balanced climate actions that prioritize justice, center love, and respond to the needs of our communities by aligning our actions to the Four Essentials of Climate Action - Justice, Community Resilience, Mitigation, and Congregational Transformation. But how do we bring the Essentials to life in our congregations? It’s one thing to understand something in theory, and it’s a whole other thing to put it into practice. Side With Love is here to help!
Our new monthly series on Exploring the Four Essentials of Climate Action will support you to dig into each one through:
Monthly Green Sanctuary Community Meetings where UUs learn together, support each other, and celebrate progress
Examples of how other congregations are taking action
Tools, videos, and other resources to support your work
Together, we can explore the many ways UUs are nourishing and strengthening our communities (Community Resilience) in ways that prioritize those most harmed (Justice) while reducing the pollution that drives climate change (Mitigation) and improving the ways we work together (Congregational Transformation). It’ll be great fun!

In addition to the monthly emails, the Green Sanctuary Community Meetings will explore each Essential twice, once in the fall, once in the spring. Of course, the Four Essentials are intersectional, so each of these topics will reference the other Essentials.

At the end of the series, you will have so many examples of how individual congregations are taking action on each Essential - and how some are able to cover all Four with one campaign - that you will go from not knowing what to do to having an abundance of options to choose from. Plus, you’ll be able to make connections with other congregations through the Community Meetings.

PS: Please meet our new Climate Justice Fellow! Elio Farley (they/he/any) is a community organizer and Harvard Divinity School seminarian. With roots in Chicago and Vermont, Elio fights for abolition, climate justice, queer youth liberation, comprehensive sex education, and labor rights. They are inspired by interfaith and immigrant-led economic justice movements, are interested in the world-building potential of congregational life, and believe that a radically loving world really is possible. He is the Climate Justice Fellow for the UUA’s Side With Love Organizing Strategy team and is pursuing Unitarian Universalist ordination.
