Defending Public Lands | Standing Rock Anniversary: Recording & Resources

Our October 2026 Green Sanctuary 2030 Community Meeting focused on Defending Public Lands | Standing Rock Anniversary. As part of our Standing Rock Anniversary events, Deb Cruz from JUUstice WA, outlined the Trump Administration’s attacks on Public Lands and how our congregations can engage with the Defend Against the Assault on Environmental Protections: Public Lands Rules and the Endangerment Finding.

We learned:

  • The Administration’s assaults public lands, including current attacks on Boundary Waters, NM, Chaco Canyon, NM, Oak Flat, AZ, Tongass, AK, and others

  • Indigenous responses to these assaults.

  • Federal responsibilities under National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)

  • How our comments play a pivotal role in fighting back.  Federal departments and agencies are required to address all issues and concerns raised in each of the comments.  That can buy precious time for alternative solutions, lawsuits, new administrations, etc.

  • More comments means more attention!  Petitions often count as just ONE comment, even if thousands sign.  It is so, so, so important that you submit a comment.  It’s better to be personal than perfect!

Here’s what folks thought about the meeting

“Thank you so much for sharing so much specific information about the erosion of public lands and what we can/should be doing to fight for environmental justice.  My eyes were truly opened tonight to the depth of the problem.”  Kathy V.

“Deb, your knowledge is empowering. I honor all the work you have done and your willingness to share. We all will be able to share with others, thanks to your energy.”  Ann M.

“Thanks for clearly demonstrating the link between climate activism and UU values.  We are fellow travelers and have commented on Roadless rule and BAAJA.  Your words encourage us to do even more!” John K.

Calls to Action

Tell your Senators to OPPOSE S. 5653 Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026

This bill further guts the National Environmental Policy Act, the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act and adverse impacts on Tribes/Nations through the changes in the Historical Preservation Act. Info and talking points will help you contact your Senators to oppose the vote. The bill is very strongly opposed by the Tribes/Nations.

By NOV. 2: Submit public comment opposing Rescission of the Endangerment Finding

EPA's Endangerment Finding regulated greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act, requiring EPA to limit climate-warming pollution as a public health issue.

Rescission would:

  • Remove Federal authority to regulate GHG emissions.

  • Remove funding for mitigation and exacerbating climate impacts on Tribal subsistence, health, and infrastructure.

  • Eliminate vehicle, aircraft and power plant emissions monitoring and reporting programs providing pathways rescind requirements on other industries.

  • Leave room for the Dept of Justice to file lawsuits against States’ GHG programs because they are not in compliance.

Request release of Solar for All Funds.

This was the call to action from Joseph McNeil from Standing Rock for the Side with Love “The Gathering” held on October 12, 2026 to honor their ongoing struggle against the Dakota Access Pipeline on the its 10-year anniversary.

Review the letter template.  Then personalize your response, don’t just copy & paste!  If comments look too similar or look too much like form letters, they will not be given as much weight as one that looks unique.

NOV. 18 Fractal Practices for Faithful Climate Justice - Adult Faith Formation Green Sanctuary 2030 Community Meeting

This curriculum has been created to accompany your community as you live into the less and more of our faithful climate justice journey. RSVP today!
